Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Creation That Shaped the Modern World
There are numerous candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a modest trading ship required around 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”
Thanks to their rapid automated saw, which turned logs into boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary motion into vertical motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary motion into a lateral motion advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the wood forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to integrate them in order that they operated in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward stroke and moving with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of basic components.”
