Ben Stokes Secures 6 Scalps in England Test Series Preparation Match

Practice match, Lilac Hill (first day of 3)

Development squad 382: Jacks 84, McKinney 67; Ben Stokes 6-52

National team: awaiting batting

The England captain produced 6 scalps in his return to play following July but England encountered an injury concern regarding fast bowler Wood on the first day of their Ashes warm-up versus the development squad in Perth.

Captain's Impressive Return

Stokes, making his comeback after nearly four months out with a shoulder injury, bowled sixteen overs across three spells for his 6-52 against England Lions – all to catches taken on the on-side.

Wood's Fitness Worry

Pace bowler Mark Wood, also making his comeback after nine months out with a knee injury, delivered a scheduled amount of 8 overs before exiting the field in the afternoon session because of a hamstring problem. He will have a scan on the following day.

The Wood situation sucked the energy out of the day, as the Lions were dismissed for three hundred eighty-two on a slow, low surface after an uncontested toss at the venue.

Squad Planning

England aimed to bowl first to get overs in their legs before the initial Test match at Optus Stadium, beginning on 21 November.

In a possible hint towards their first-Test plans, the tourists selected an fast bowling lineup – four specialists plus the captain – and omitted off-spinner Bashir in the Lions.

Batting Standouts

Bethell didn't strengthen his case for inclusion in the Test team, making just two runs, but Will Jacks boosted his claim to be selected later in the tour by scoring eighty-four.

Ben McKinney, Jordan Cox, 17-year-old Rew and Potts also made half-centuries.

Low-key Atmosphere

The team's plan to play a solitary practice match against the Lions has been criticized by some former players but Stokes responded by labeling the doubters "has-beens".

A relaxed first day in front of a small crowd of spectators at the ground was certainly a world away from what England will face at a sold-out Optus Stadium next week.

Captain's Excellent Performance

Stokes was superb in the contest against the Indian team in the domestic season, only to strain himself to injury. He missed the final Test with a shoulder tear.

The captain has not completed a full part in any of England's past four tours because of various injuries and the tourists' chances of regaining the Ashes are vastly diminished if he is absent from any of the five matches in Australia.

He has been practicing at maximum speed for two months and appeared in fine shape on Wednesday, even if he could not comprehend the way in which some of his dismissals were presented.

Jacks Pushes Claim

Will Jacks is not expected to play in the first Test – the team look to have shown their hand with the eleven named here. Still, he may have moved himself in front of the out-of-sorts Bethell with his 84, which came at almost a run a ball.

Prior to the doubt over Mark Wood, the five fast bowlers in the England XI for this match may not have been the attack for the initial match.

Brydon Carse missed the opening day because of illness, with his place going to Josh Tongue. Tongue had Lions opener McKinney edging to the keeper just after the break.

Though the captain took the scalps, Archer impressed observers. He was energetic with the new ball and again after lunch, when he caused problems for Will Jacks.

In the omission of Shoaib Bashir and with Mark Wood leaving the field, Root was required to deliver 14 overs of his off-spin. It was mediocre fare, costing 117 runs at an economy of more than eight.

Root at least claimed a wicket in the final session when Fisher somehow struck a full toss to the fielder before Archer bounced out Matthew Potts for fifty-three with the final ball of the day.
