Delhi Rises to Hazardous Smog Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of the city registered an AQI above 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold set by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x higher than safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes
Since 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly haze that blankets the city as winter begins.
Yet recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the highest court to request a easing of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Verdict and Reality
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed pollution spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings seen during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Issue
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in Beijing, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Multiple Contamination Factors
This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is enormous, according to multiple studies.
These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely mortalities annually in the capital.
