Minister States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defence minister has revealed that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Background

This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This wider security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
